Under Khedive Ismail, who opened the Suez Canal in 1869 with great display, Egypt's national debt rose from £7 million in 1863 to almost £100 million by 1876, when a Commission of the Public Debt was set up at his foreign creditors' insistence. The Ottoman sultan dismissed Ismail in 1879, and Britain occupied Egypt in 1882.
