At Panipat, north of Delhi, in April 1526, Babur defeated the much larger army of Ibrahim Lodi, sultan of Delhi, placing artillery and matchlock men behind a line of carts lashed together. The battle ended the Delhi sultanate and began the Mughal Empire.
