An earthquake lays Laodicea in ruins. Tacitus records that this famous city of Asia rebuilt itself from its own resources, without help from Rome.
Set beside it, Revelation 3:17 (setting): “Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked:”
To the church in Laodicea, c. AD 95: Written to a city that had rebuilt itself after an earthquake from its own resources, without help from Rome.
