Nehemiah 5 records Judeans who had mortgaged fields, vineyards and houses to buy grain in a dearth, and had borrowed money for the king's tribute, with sons and daughters already in bondage. Nehemiah rebukes the nobles and rulers for exacting usury, and they swear before the priests to restore the lands and the hundredth part they had taken.
