As it was in the days of Noe (in the Revelation block)

REVELATION · THE FLOOD, AS THE TEMPLATE OF THE END

Home › Timeline › Plates › As it was in the days of Noe (in the Revelation block)

Jesus sets the flood as the template of the end, and gives it a second instance in the same breath. Read side by side, Genesis 6 and Revelation share a root word, an ark, a list, a door, a number and a name — and a covenant that bounds the pattern so that it spirals rather than repeats.

Jesus drew the pattern himself — THE TEXT

“And as it was in the days of Noe, so shall it be also in the days of the Son of man. They did eat, they drank, they married wives, they were given in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark, and the flood came, and destroyed them all” (Luke 17:26–27). He gives a second instance at once: “Likewise also as it was in the days of Lot; they did eat, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they builded; But the same day that Lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven, and destroyed them all. Even thus shall it be in the day when the Son of man is revealed” (17:28–30). The flood, Sodom, the end: one shape, three times, in his words.

“Destroy them which destroy the earth” — THE TEXT, IN ITS LANGUAGES

Genesis 6:11–13 turns on one Hebrew root, shachath, to corrupt or to ruin: the earth “was corrupt” (vattishachet); “behold, it was corrupt” (nishchatah); “all flesh had corrupted his way” (hishchit); “behold, I will destroy them with the earth” (mashchitam). What was ruining itself is ruined. Revelation 11:18 closes on the same turn in Greek, one verb twice: “and shouldest destroy them which destroy the earth” (diaphtheirai tous diaphtheirontas tēn gēn).

The ark, and the storm — THE TEXT

The very next verse: “And the temple of God was opened in heaven, and there was seen in his temple the ark of his testament: and there were lightnings, and voices, and thunderings, and an earthquake, and great hail” (Revelation 11:19). In the New Testament one Greek word, kibōtos, names both arks: Noah's four times (Matthew 24:38, Luke 17:27, Hebrews 11:7, 1 Peter 3:20) and the ark of the covenant twice (Hebrews 9:4, Revelation 11:19). The King James calls that ark “the ark of the testimony” (Exodus 25:22). In two verses of Revelation: the destroyers of the earth, the ark, and the storm.

What came before the flood, and what would not repent — THE TEXTS · ENOCH

Genesis names it briefly: “the earth was filled with violence”, and “every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually” (6:11, 6:5). Enoch names it in full: “And Azazel taught men to make swords, and knives, and shields, and breastplates, and made known to them the metals of the earth and the art of working them … And there arose much godlessness, and they committed fornication, and they were led astray, and became corrupt in all their ways. Semjaza taught enchantments, and root-cuttings …” (1 Enoch 8:1–3). Revelation lists what the survivors of the plagues would not turn from: “idols of gold, and silver, and brass”, and “their murders … their sorceries … their fornication … their thefts” (9:20–21). The weapons and the murders; the metals and the idols; the root-cuttings and the sorceries (pharmakeia, drugs); the fornication and the fornication. Enoch's closing words are Genesis's own: “all flesh had corrupted his way” (6:12).

The warning waits, a witness speaks, and there is a door — THE TEXT

“The longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing” (1 Peter 3:20); of the end, “The Lord is not slack concerning his promise … but is longsuffering to us-ward” (2 Peter 3:9). Noah was “a preacher of righteousness” (2 Peter 2:5); Revelation has two witnesses who “prophesy a thousand two hundred and threescore days” (11:3). He built before he saw: “By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house” (Hebrews 11:7). Then the door: “and the LORD shut him in” (Genesis 7:16). In Revelation: “behold, I have set before thee an open door, and no man can shut it” (3:8), and “Behold, I stand at the door, and knock” (3:20).

The eighth — THE TEXT, IN ITS LANGUAGES

One Greek word for eighth, ogdoos, runs through both. Noah: “saved Noah the eighth person” (2 Peter 2:5), one of the “eight souls … saved by water” (1 Peter 3:20). The eighth day of circumcision (Luke 1:59, Acts 7:8), the covenant cut into the body. And twice in Revelation: “the beast that was, and is not, even he is the eighth, and is of the seven, and goeth into perdition” (17:11), and “the eighth, beryl”, a foundation of the city that comes down from God (21:20).

A true eighth and a counterfeit one — A READING

Noah is counted eighth by grace — “But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD” (Genesis 6:8) — and counted among the house he carried. The beast counts itself eighth: a new beginning claimed by its own number. The number is the same; the difference is who does the counting. It is pride on this site's geometry, where the self-reading holds at one while the true reading falls.

The name — THE TEXT

Before the flood, “mighty men which were of old, men of renown” (Genesis 6:4). After it, Babel: “let us make us a name” (11:4). At the end, “the name of the beast, or the number of his name” (Revelation 13:17), set against “a white stone, and in the stone a new name written, which no man knoweth saving he that receiveth it” (2:17).

Not a loop: the bow over the throne — THE TEXT

After the flood: “I do set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a token of a covenant between me and the earth” (Genesis 9:13). Before the judgments of Revelation open: “there was a rainbow round about the throne, in sight like unto an emerald” (4:3). The promise bounds the pattern. Water once, and not again: “Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished: But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men” (2 Peter 3:6–7). The same shape, a different element, and the covenant over it.

In the geometry — A READING

“All flesh had corrupted his way”: the aim turned from the light, until the turning fills the earth. The ark is the vessel held to the reference before the pressure arrives, built in the dry, “of things not seen as yet”. It is not built in the rain.

What the text grants, and what it does not — OPEN

Three instances in the text itself — the flood, Sodom, the end — are the warrant for the pattern. Any cycle between them is a claim for this page's cycles view, to be measured before it is asserted. Revelation 9:21 also keeps the order of the commandments — murder, adultery, theft — so the match with Enoch is strongest where the commandments are silent: the sorceries, and the metals.
