The Liverpool and Manchester Railway, designed by George Stephenson and opened in 1830, was the first railway to link two major cities and the first fully timetabled service for passengers and freight hauled entirely by steam locomotives; Stephenson's Rocket had won its locomotive trials in 1829. By 1870 Britain had about 13,500 miles of railway.
