Under the third caliph, Uthman (644–656), a single standard copy of the Qur'an was compiled from the manuscripts kept by Hafsa and copies were sent to each province; by the account in Sahih al-Bukhari, all other Qur'anic materials were ordered burnt. The standard fixed the consonantal text, and more than one authoritative way of reading it continued to be recognised.
