On 5 February 1597, on Hideyoshi's orders, 26 Catholics, twenty of them Japanese, Franciscans, Jesuits, laymen and young boys among them, were crucified in a row on Nishizaka Hill in Nagasaki and killed with spears. Britannica marks their deaths as the beginning of centuries of persecution; they were canonised in 1862.
